It’s officially the new year and you’re excited, motivated and suddenly feeling like you’re surrounded by so… much… stuff! Sound familiar? That distracting feeling is clutter, and research shows that it can interfere with your brain's ability to process information and affect your ability to focus. Yikes! Luckily, it’s the perfect time of year to declutter and prep your home for an incredible 2020. Use some of that magical, it’s-a-new-year-and-new-me motivation, along the tips below, to rejuvenate your home today.
• …Prioritize before you organize - Don’t fall into the common trap of getting overwhelmed before you even begin. Make a list of the 3 spaces in your home where you and your family spend the most time. Focus your organizing efforts on those areas first. Think about what areas within those rooms cause stress or frustration on a daily basis and you’ll know exactly where you need to begin. Tackle one drawer or cabinet every few days so that it isn’t overwhelming.
• …Make room for the new - The popular phrase “out with the old, in with the new” is particularly relevant this time of year. After Christmas ends, there’s a pile of presents that need to be put away…hence, in with the new! As for the old, it’s the perfect time to grab some trash bags and set aside an hour to throw away your home’s expired products. Start with the kitchen pantry and the fridge, and then make your way to other rooms in your house. You’ll love the newfound shelf space and may be surprised at how good this quick task will make your home (and you!) feel.
• …Donate without reservation - Look around your home. What clothing items, furniture and household goods in your home are collecting dust and taking up valuable real estate? If you haven’t used it in a year or more, it may be time to say goodbye. Consider donating your ‘too small, too big or not my style anymore’ items to make space for the things you actually use and love. Plus, it’s easier than ever to donate your gently used items. Google “schedule a donation pickup” to find an organization near you that will come to your house to pick up your donations. Or, try out the Give Back Box, which provides a prepaid shipping label to turn any cardboard box you already have into a donations box - it’s a simple way to donate to a good cause.
• …Simple systems = long-term success- Be realistic and create straightforward systems that are simple enough for the whole family to maintain. Use labels to organize in spaces that multiple people will be using, such as the pantry. Evaluate how you do things now and update systems that aren’t working efficiently. The most important thing to remember about getting organized is that it’s an ongoing process. A system that worked for your family 3 years ago might not be the best fit now, and that’s ok. If something’s not working, don’t be afraid to change it!
